What is assessed before eyelid surgery?

Dr Otgen Clinic guide

What is assessed before eyelid surgery?

Excess skin and bagging on the upper or lower eyelid can make a person look tired, and marked drooping of the upper lid can affect the visual field in some people. However, a low brow, true eyelid ptosis, dry eye, thyroid eye disease and allergic problems can cause similar complaints, so a detailed examination is required before any procedure. The physician assesses the eyelid skin, the fat compartments, the muscle structure, the brow position, the ocular surface and any existing asymmetry. Blood thinners, smoking, previous eye surgery and contact lens use should all be mentioned during the consultation. Blepharoplasty does not remove every wrinkle or all darkness around the eyes; the goals and the limits should be clarified before the procedure. If there is a change in vision, rapid one-sided drooping or new swelling, an ophthalmology examination takes priority over an aesthetic assessment.
