What Is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a surgical body contouring procedure that reduces localised fat deposits and gives the body more balanced contours.
Most importantly, liposuction is not a weight-loss method; it is a contouring operation that targets stubborn fat deposits resistant to diet and exercise.
Fat cells are removed by suction through special cannulas, aiming for a more defined, attractive shape in areas such as the waist, abdomen and hips.
In the right patients, liposuction can improve how clothes fit, make body proportions more attractive and reduce concerns about localised excess.
However, if skin elasticity is low, there is significant excess weight or marked sagging, liposuction alone may not be enough. In these cases, additional skin-tightening procedures or other surgical options may be considered.
Success depends less on how much fat is removed than on removing a controlled amount from the right areas in harmony with your body contours.
How Is Liposuction Performed?
Liposuction begins with an examination and planning. The areas to be shaped, skin elasticity, fat distribution and your expectations are assessed.
Before the operation, markings are drawn to identify the areas to be treated and to plan symmetry of the body contours.
Depending on its scope, the procedure can be done under local anaesthesia, sedation or general anaesthesia. In most techniques, a special fluid mixture called "tumescent" solution is injected into the fat to control bleeding and make fat removal easier.
Thin cannulas are then inserted into the fat through very small incisions, and the fat is removed by suction. The surgeon works in a controlled, layered way to achieve an even look and reduce the risk of dents.
A compression garment is usually put on at the end of the procedure. It helps reduce swelling, lets the tissues adapt to the new contour and supports more even healing.
After surgery, factors such as walking, diet and wearing the compression garment directly affect the quality of the result.
Which Areas Can Liposuction Treat?
- Abdomen, waist and flanks
- Back and bra line
- Inner and outer thighs, inner knees
- Backs of the upper arms
- Under the chin (double chin)
- The chest in men, as part of gynaecomastia treatment planning
Several areas can be planned in the same session. The doctor determines how much fat and how many areas can be treated safely in one session.
Liposuction, Tummy Tuck or a Non-Surgical Method?
- Good skin elasticity with localised excess fat: liposuction
- Marked loose skin or muscle separation on the abdomen: tummy tuck, combined with liposuction if needed
- Small, limited fat deposits in people who do not want surgery: non-surgical methods such as cryolipolysis can be considered; their effect is more limited
Which option is suitable becomes clear once skin elasticity and fat distribution have been assessed at the examination.
Preparing for Liposuction
- Tell your physician about all medicines, supplements and previous operations
- Medicines and supplements with a blood-thinning effect are stopped for the recommended period beforehand, with your physician's knowledge
- Smoking can impair healing, so a break before and after surgery is recommended
- A stable weight is important for a lasting result
- You are measured for your compression garment before surgery; comfortable clothes are prepared for the first few days
Liposuction Recovery Timeline
The timeline below is a general guide; recovery varies with the number of areas treated and from person to person.
- Days 1–3: fluid may leak from the cannula entry points; short, frequent walks are recommended
- Week 1: the compression garment is worn continuously; most people return to desk work
- Weeks 2–4: most of the bruising fades; light exercise is resumed with the doctor’s approval
- Weeks 4–6: the compression garment is worn for as long as the doctor advises; intensive exercise is resumed with the doctor’s approval
- Months 3–6: the swelling resolves and the new body contour becomes defined
Possible Risks of Liposuction
As with any surgery, liposuction carries risks; these are discussed in detail with the doctor before the operation.
- Contour irregularities or rippling
- Fluid collection (seroma)
- Temporary numbness in the treated area
- Bleeding or infection
- Rare but serious risks: blood clots and fat embolism
Factors That Determine the Cost of Liposuction
The cost of liposuction is calculated individually, based on the plan made at your examination. The main factors are:
- The number and size of the areas to be treated
- The technique used and the length of the operation
- The type of anaesthesia and the length of the hospital stay
- Whether an additional procedure, such as a tummy tuck or fat transfer, is done in the same session
- Compression garment, medication and post-operative check-ups
The quote you receive states in writing what is included (tests, medication, check-ups, and accommodation and transfers if applicable).
The information on this page is for general guidance only; diagnosis and treatment plans are decided individually after a physician's examination.
Travelling from Abroad: Length of Stay and Follow-up After You Return
For the first check-up and to check how the compression garment fits, patients travelling from abroad stay in Türkiye for about a week in most plans. If several areas were treated, the stay can be longer; your surgeon decides exactly how long you need to stay.
- The first consultation can take place online before you travel, using your photos and health information; if you live in Germany, a consultation in German at our Leverkusen location is also possible
- The treatment plan and quote are sent in writing before you travel, stating separately whether tests, check-ups, and accommodation and transfers if applicable, are included
- The compression garment is kept on during the flight; on long flights, the doctor’s advice on reducing the risk of clots is followed
- Before discharge, it is agreed who you can contact with questions after you return and what your check-up plan is; communication in German and coordination of follow-up continue through our Leverkusen location

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is a suitable candidate for liposuction?
Suitability is decided after a specialist assessment, a review of your medical history and a clinical examination.
How does recovery go after liposuction?
Mild bruising and swelling may occur in the first days. Most patients return to daily life within a few days; your physician will explain the use of the compression garment and the follow-up plan.
When is the final treatment plan confirmed?
It is finalised after the clinical assessment, once the method and scope are clear.
Does fat removed by liposuction come back?
The fat cells removed do not come back, but the remaining fat cells can grow if you gain weight. Keeping your weight stable is important to maintain the result.
How much weight do you lose with liposuction?
Liposuction is not a weight-loss method; the aim is to improve body contour, not to lose weight. The change on the scales is usually small; the difference shows in your contours.
How long is the compression garment worn after liposuction?
The doctor decides the duration based on the areas treated and the extent of the procedure. In the first weeks, wearing it all day is recommended.
Does the skin sag after liposuction?
In people with good skin elasticity, the skin adapts to the new contour. If elasticity is low, sagging can become more noticeable; in that case lifting procedures are considered as well.
I am travelling from abroad for liposuction. How many days should I stay in Türkiye?
For the first check-up and to check the compression garment, a stay of about a week is recommended in most plans. If several areas were treated, the stay can be longer; your surgeon decides exactly how long you need to stay.
