What Is Beard Transplant?

Beard and moustache transplants complement each other and are increasingly popular. Beard transplant is a cosmetic surgical procedure that corrects a sparse, uneven or patchy beard.

The procedure involves transplanting hair follicles to the beard area of the face, creating a fuller, more even and more attractive beard.

Beard transplant is used to increase beard density, shape the beard line, cover scars or fill in areas where the beard is missing.

Which Techniques Are Used in Beard Transplant?

Two main techniques are generally used in beard transplant: DHI and sapphire FUE. Both involve removing individual grafts (follicular units) from the donor area at the back of the head and transplanting them to the desired area of the face.

In the DHI technique, the surgeon removes the follicles one by one and transplants them straight away to the target area using a special device called a Choi pen.

In the sapphire FUE technique, the follicles are removed from the donor area, micro-channels are then opened in the target area, and the grafts collected earlier are placed into these channels.

Because it tends to give a more natural result, our clinic mostly uses sapphire FUE for beard transplants, unlike scalp hair transplants, where DHI is often preferred.

Both techniques are performed under local anaesthesia, so the procedure is not painful. As no incisions or stitches are needed, recovery is also comfortable.

At your assessment with the specialist, a treatment plan is created to match the beard density and shape you have in mind.

If your donor area is sufficient and your general health is suitable, a natural, fuller beard is possible.

How Is Beard Transplant Performed?

Beard and moustache transplant is a single-session procedure performed under local anaesthesia. It takes about 4–5 hours on average, and you do not feel pain during the procedure.

Mild scabbing may appear in the treated area the day after the procedure. This is normal and clears up on its own within a short time.
